The contractor's temporary line in the cutting near Sutton Common
Station. The small tipping wagons were used to move the earth from cutting to
embankment. Note the temporary water tower.

A drag excavator digging the cutting at Gander Green Lane in
October 1928. A big improvement from the days of navvies, picks, shovels and
wheelbarrows, but positively primitive when compared with the earth moving
machinery of the twentyfirst century!
