Virgin Cross Country
| Cross country services (in BR days Inter-Regional Trains) have a long history and some services can be traced back to examples such as the L&NWR "Sunny South Express" between Liverpool and Eastbourne, "The Pines Express" between Manchester and Bournemouth and the un-named 11 a.m. Brighton-Cardiff. |
| Virgin Cross Country regularly use HST units for the
Bournemouth-Scotland service which run on the Southern as far as Basingstoke
where they continue via Reading.
Class 43 or High Speed Train Units (HST) were introduced on the Western Region in 1976. These units were built by British Railway Engineering (BREL) at Crewe works and are powered by 2,250 h.p. Paxman Valenta diesels with powered units at either end of the set. |
