The LMS Princess Coronation class, introduced in 1938, was a derivative of the Princess Royal class of five years earlier. Used principally for the heavy Scottish expresses between Euston and Glasgow, they did occasionally stray elsewhere on the LMS and one, N°46236 City of Bradford, ventured onto Southern metals as a participant in the 1948 Locomotive Interchange Trials

N°46236 City of Bradford seen at Wandsworth whilst taking part in the Trials for which it was paired with an eight wheel ex-WD tender of larger water capacity due to the absence of water troughs. For the Trials this tender was lettered LMS.
