The LC&DR R Class 0-4-4T was the last to be introduced
by Kirtley, and therefore the last to be introduced by the LC&DR, when it
appeared in 1891. Bearing a marked similarity to his first engines, the A Class
0-4-4T of 1875, main external differences were square topped tanks, a square
bunker and higher-mounted condensing pipes leading into the tops of the tanks
compared with the A Class's rounded tanks, bunker and pipes to the front
of the tanks. 18 locomotives were built under Kirtley but following the
formation of the SE&CR in 1899 an order for another 15 locomotives was
placed with Sharp, Stewart for delivery the following year. With slightly
larger cylinders, six inch larger bogie wheels and larger bunkers, these 15
were denoted as class R1. This didn't stop the SE&CR calling the
rebuilt SER R Class the same when first of
these appeared in 1910!
The R1 locomotives were fitted with both vacuum and Westinghouse brakes and Wainwright H class boilers with 160 lb working pressure against the R Class's 150 lb. All the R Class locomotives were subsequently rebuilt with the H class boilers, also being upgraded to the larger cylinders of the R1 class. Two R1 Class engines were scrapped in 1929, three R Class in 1940 with the remainder of the classes living to see BR ownership, with many of them converted for pull and push working. |
