LBSCR I2 Class 4-4-2T

N°15 in LB&SCR livery with the Royal train.

Marsh followed up his not-at-all-successful I1 class of 1906 with another lack-lustre product, the I2 class 4-4-2T in 1907. The first was N°11, following on sequentially from the last of the I1 numbers, which had very similar dimensions as the twenty predecessors but with a boiler diameter increased from 4' 3" to 4' 6" and an extended smokebox mounted on a saddle. The performance of the engines, though, was far below expectations which led to a short life with the first two withdrawn by the Southern Railway in 1933 without any attempt at the re-building which had been so successful with the I1 class. All were withdrawn by 1939, although two, N°13 withdrawn in 1939 and N°19 withdrawn in 1937, had a further life after withdrawal when they were placed over running-shed pits at Bournemouth, sand-bagged and used as air raid shelters. Then in 1942 fate smiled more kindly on them and they were purchased by the Government to work passenger trains on the Longmoor Military Railway. First numbered as 2400 and 2401, they became 72400 and 72401 from 1944.

N°19, which went on to have a second lease of life on the Longmoor Military Railway. Note the clerestoried roof (or louvre-deck) which was not for letting light in but for ventilation. This was also a feature on the I1, the I3 and the I4 classes.
