SECR Maunsell D1 Class

photograph: Mike Morant collection

D1 Class N°1494 in barely discernible Southern Railway livery at what appears to be Ashford shed.

Maunsell was confronted with what had become his perennial problems: increased train capacity combined with the need for a light axle loading. He had already achieved those ends with his brilliant E1 class rebuilds of Wainwright's E class and he wisely followed a similar path to success by applying the same principles to some of his predecessor's D class 4-4-0s. These D1 locomotives were, to all intents and purposes, the same as the E1 class.

Ashford was blessed with a great design team but didn't have the works capacity to facilitate the rebuilding in situ and so the drawings and ten locomotives were dispatched to the works of Beyer Peacock during the course of 1921. The resultant rebuilds proved to be just as effective and economical as the E1 class and provided sterling service on the railways of southern England for the next forty years.

Two more of the D class were rebuilt during the following year but the work was undertaken in-house at Ashford. It says a great deal about their success that a further nine examples, also rebuilt at Ashford, followed in their forebears' footsteps some five years later in 1927. The table below lists the relevant rebuilding dates for all members of the class.
