LSWR 0395 Class 0-6-0

N°3440 of 1883 photographed at an Feltham on 6th May 1938.

The 395 class 0-6-0 goods locomive was the first main line goods engine produced by Adams for the L&SWR. First appearing in November of 1881 some 70 locomotives were built between then and February 1886.

The locos were fitted with a six wheel tender, the design of which perpetuated Beattie's characteristic handrail and footboard, extending nearly its full length. The locomotives built in 1885 and 1886 were heavier due to an increased front end and were also known as the 496 class. These latter locos were fitted with single slide bars as opposed to the four bar arrangement fitted to the 1881 to 1883 engines. These locos were widely used by the R.O.D. for overseas service during the First World War though four were lost in transit to Palestine in 1918 when the ship carrying them, the SS Arabic, was torpedoed and sank. Nany of them were subsequently sold and did not return to L&SWR metals. Modifications to the class during the years included the fitting of ex-LC&DR boilers and Adams 3,300 gallon tenders. Eighteen of the class survived into British Railways' ownership.
