The Class 37 is a diesel-electric locomotive also known as the
English Electric Type 3, ordered as part of the British Rail modernisation plan.
They were numbered in two series, D6600-D6608 and D6700-D6999. English Electric
divided construction of the engines between Vulcan Foundry and Robert Stephenson
& Hawthorns. First entering service on 2nd December 1960 the class
eventually grew to 309 units across seven sub-classes, though with so many in
the class there could be differences between engines even within the same sub
class.
They became a familiar sight on many parts of the British Rail network, in
particular forming the main motive power for InterCity services in East Anglia
and within Scotland but although they appeared on all Southern Region metals
they were never a particularly common sight. The South Eastern sector saw them
on aggregate, oil and emgineering trains. In 1996 there was a plan to
run a "Nightstar" service from Swansea and Plymouth to London
utilising class 37/6 engines but in 1999 this was abandoned before it had even
begun.
